A winter storm buried the Mid Atlantic Coast with heavy snow that reached 2 feet in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and nearly 2 feet in nearby Coatesville. At the height of the storm, Philadelphia received 5 inches in just one hour. The nation's capital was buried under 15 inches.
An incredible snowstorm raging along the New England Coast overwhelmed areas north of Boston with up to 4 feet of snow. Three clipper ships were wrecked along Cape Cod.

Tropical cyclones of similar intensity are referred to as typhoons in the Western Pacific and cyclones in most of the southern hemisphere and Indian Ocean.
